Privacy policy

Give or Take is a free daily guessing game. You don't need an account to play, and I never ask for your email address or your real name.

On your device

Your progress, settings, streak and stats are kept in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser data for this site removes them.

On the server

When you finish a day's five, the game sends the server:

• a random ID your browser made the first time you played, which isn't linked to anything about you
• the name you picked for the leaderboard, which can be anything you like
• your answers and scores for that day
• your current streak and your time zone's offset from UTC, used only for reminders
• the country your connection comes from, as a two-letter code, for the country leaderboard. Cloudflare works this out from your connection, and your IP address isn't saved with it.

If you send a challenge link or join a group, the server also keeps a record of that link or that membership, so scores can be compared.

Reminders

Reminders are off unless you turn them on. If you do, the server keeps the push address your browser gives it, your time zone offset, and the dates it last sent you something. It uses the times you finished your recent rounds to send the reminder around when you usually play. You'll get at most one reminder and one evening streak nudge a day, and nothing on a day you've already played. Turning reminders off in Settings deletes the push address.

Counting and spam

The server keeps daily totals of things like visits, rounds started and results shared. To avoid counting the same round milestone twice after a refresh, the browser sends a random ID for that day's round. It is not linked to your player name or score, and the server deletes it within 90 days. Other actions, such as whether a share succeeded or a reminder was enabled, are counted as daily totals.

To stop spam, your IP address is used to limit how many requests can come from one place in a short time. The IP is not saved with your round ID or scores; rate-limit counts are kept apart and expire within an hour.

What isn't collected

No email addresses, phone numbers, tracking cookies or ads. Nothing is sold or passed on to anyone for marketing.

Hosting

The game runs on Cloudflare: Workers for the site, D1 for the database and KV for the spam limits.

Credits

On browsers that can't show flag emoji, country flags use Twemoji artwork (copyright Twitter, Inc and other contributors) under CC BY 4.0, loaded with the Country Flag Emoji Polyfill by TalkJS. The font is served from this site.

Children

The game is for a general audience and isn't aimed at children under 13. It doesn't ask anyone for personal information.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it.
